About the library
The heart of the University of Ghana Library System
Founded in 1948 and named after David Mowbray Balme, the University’s first Principal, the Balme Library is the main library of the University of Ghana and the largest in the University of Ghana Library System (UGLS).
It holds more than 400,000 printed volumes, a growing collection of e-journals and e-books, and serves as a depository for most United Nations publications. Students and researchers also use the Research Commons, the Knowledge Commons, the Braille Library and the 24-hour reading room.
