The Students’ Reference Library (SRL) was set up in 1963 as an undergraduate collection. The idea was to have a separate collection within the Library to house textbooks and other relevant materials including pamphlets, chapters of books and photocopied documents which have been recommended by lecturers to be placed on reserve. The collection is directly linked to the courses taught and mainly supports the teaching, learning and research of both staff and students. The collection covers all subjects taught in the University.
The Students Reference Library is located on the second floor of the main building. Materials in the SRL may only be used within the Library. There are two locations within the SRL. These are the Balme Library Students’ Reference Collection Open Shelves (blsos) and the Balme Library Students’ Reference Reserved Collection (blsr). Materials on the open shelves (blsos) may be accessed without a valid student/staff identification card. On the other hand, users need to consult the staff in the Reserved Collection Room with a valid student or staff identification card in order to access materials in this collection.
The user has to consult the UGCat (Online Catalogue) in order to identify materials in the reserved collection for access.
